Supportive Network
Seattle University’s mission of caring for the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—encourages you to cultivate social responsibility, ethical grounding, and global awareness. This holistic approach supports you in becoming an empathetic, well-rounded therapist.
The Master of Arts in Psychology brings together research and reflection from across the fields of clinical psychology, philosophy and the humanities to lay a strong foundation for your clinical practice. You’ll gain the skills to be fully present in moments of suffering, foster healing and meaning and serve effectively across social and cultural differences.
Experiential Learning
Our internship placement program will prepare you for success as a psychotherapist working in community settings, private practice, hospitals or clinics. You will gain in-depth clinical experience by interning up to 20 hours per week for 9-12 months in one of approximately 30 sites in the Puget Sound area.
Open the Doors to Self-Discovery
A graduate degree in psychology is a journey of self-discovery and intellectual growth. You’ll study human behavior, cognition and emotion while building the skills to address psychological challenges with insight and care.
A Human-Centered Approach
The program stands out for its human-centered, interdisciplinary approach to clinical training. Rooted in the traditions of existentialism and phenomenology, it explores big questions and invites fresh insights into the richness and diversity of human experience.
An In-Demand Field
Mental health professionals are in high demand, and upon completion of the degree, and passing certification, most students go on to become Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) in Washington State, where they work as therapists in community mental health agencies, private or group-based practices and other care settings.
I didn't just learn how to do therapy; I learned a way of being - a way of turning towards others - that has provided an essential foundation for my career as a play therapist. Throughout the program, I was immersed in stimulating readings and vibrant class discussions that inspired a complex way of thinking about the human experience.
